Fridge Buyback was first launched as a trial in 2006-07 following a survey of household energy use. The survey identified high rates of second fridge ownership with about 40% of detached homes having a second fridge. This figure was later confirmed by the ABS for Australia as a whole and is amongst the highest rate of second fridge ownership in the world.
The Fridge Buyback program was originally a NSW Government program under the Climate Change Fund. At the request of government, the Fridge Buyback program has, since 2012, operated under the NSW Government’s Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) and is the ONLY program of its kind in NSW.
Fridge Buyback has gradually grown from the small region it used to service to encompass 51 NSW councils.
